It brings traffic. As per link building it works to some extent; only the page your link is on got many other links on it.

Posting in forums for links is not all that hard if you put that forum before your links and immerse yourself in the community (and family) of the forum itself.

You can follow a few simple steps to join into an online community that can ensure that you can post links, and make those links count to their fullest potential. Read about forum posting for links here.

I agree whole heartedly, and if you look at those lists, they change and shrink all the time, as with each new list more & more forums go nofollow and/or change their rules. Forum spammers are HORRIBLE for any community, as they are not part of the community they are posting on.

That is good advice regardless of why one is joining a forum :D

I can not stress this point enough though, DO NOT SPAM, in fact, if you have the slightest notion that what you are posting may be considered spammish, I can promise you that is most likely is!

Thanks for this link, some really helpful information in there. I guess that looking at forums as a useful way to build contacts and be part of a community first and a way to get backlinks second might be the way forward then, and not rushing to post links!

I agree with alot of the comments below, get to know the moderators of the forum and post alot of relevenat information, if you can become a moderator or at least a respected poster you should be fine, I say look for forums in your niche, they usually want to find other sites that might offer something they don't. I wouldn't try to directly compete with those forums though, instead offer something they don't talk about or sell, or whatever your site may do that theirs doesn't.

follow the forum rules.... if its hard to find or you don't know you can look at what others are doing... and finally if you cant find anything there... ask a moderator

blog's link is more valuable than forum's signature. but it cost too much time to write articles....

There are a few forums around that control with an iron fist, they take away from the real meaning of an open forum for the free exchange of ideas. I've made some mistakes in forums, just relax, read the rules for that forum and express your opinion. PS... backlinks are a good thing.

I logged into a gardening forum that charged people to post links (including sig links) *boggle* there are thousands of posts, but only a few hundred over the last two years. I think there may be a connection.

IMHO, getting links from places like that, or places that rule with an iron fist are not worth it, unless you can squeeze in a link to a forum that does allow a bit more freedom. Other then that, if you are reading with resentment, some of that animosity will carry over once a link is clicked, and you do not want people looking at your site while they are unhappy '_'

But still.... even if it's nofollow.... if it's a related site, you'll get some good traffic if you are active.... like if you have an airsoft guns siote and you post in an airsoft forum with a link in your signature to your site, then you'll probably get some great traffic, even if it doesnt help out on the search engines.

    Plus, MSN doesn't count nofollow....
