they help you both but it helps much on SEO point to get page rank .submit only to high page rank directories to get good result.

 

Posting links in directories used to get backlink in past - but at the current scenario they are not marked as backlink - but they provide you traffic for sure.

Just post to the top reputable directories like DMOZ and Yahoo. The other directories will be a waste of time and monies.

 

There are lots of high quality Web directories that are free. Even directories with low page rank can be beneficial if they are highly organized and use "dofollow" links.

Not only will these directories pass relevance, they may also generate a little traffic.

You should know that Yahoo directory and Dmoz don't send much traffic, but they do give you plenty of relevance.

i have tested the directories specially if it is localize. Go to the directories in your target geolocation and submit to their directories. The more back links the better.

Matt cutts has spoken about this many times. If a directory has good quality (Not merely PR) that will be counted as backlinks.

As far as traffic is concerned I dont think you will get enough unless you are featured listed.
