Posting celebrity images -

What are the rules for posting celebrity images on a website or blog. I am launching a new fansite called www.beatle-fans.com and am curious as to what I can and cannot post. I know people post pictures of beatles and other celebrities all the time, but I also saw somewhere that you have to buy images of the Beatles through Getty Images and there may be right of publicity issues. This is not really a commercial site but there are amazon and art.com shops on the site. This is a brand new site and light on article content and I definitely want to put up more pictures. The images I put up were from a site and it specifically said that they were some of the few images that are in the public domain.

Can someone help clarify for me what constitutes fair use of celebrity images.

    thanks,

    Kat

I think you should paraphrased and indicate the sources of the photo on were you have gotten them. As far as I know most of celebrity photos comes from unknown sources it is much better if you can indicate the sources were you gotten them paraphrasing is precautionary measures to copyrighted materials.

I think I'd stay away from doing it... in the long run it probably isn't worth it.. cuz it could come back to haunt you. Photographers are super anal about protecting their pictures. To be on the safe side, unless you took the picture, I wouldn't post one.

I wish it wasn't this way, but unfortunately it seems to be the way a lot of things are headed. :(

i have a Queen fan site and have over 12,000 images and photos of the band from every possible source imagineable. if i take images of them from somebody elses site i always ask permission and offer a link back to them, other than that i find most of my images through image search engines etc.

As long as you dont remove any kind of water or copywrite mark i think you fine mate. if an issue does arrise where somebody would like a photo taken from them removed, just remove the photo immediately and make your apologies.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will proceed with caution. Is there a site which has celebrity public domain photos available?
