I just purchased a bunch of content, they are okay quality, most are rewritten. Would it improve my rankings if I posted these on my site first, wait till they are indexed, then submit them to article websites?

Aye, thats the way to go if you want the content to appear both on your site and be used for article submission.
I think its better for your site to just have unique content, Write the content yourself then get an article re-writter to rewrite them then you can submit them to article directories.
You could post it on your site first and allow the article to be indexed by the search engines and then submit to the directories. I prefer to have one on my site and rewrite it a bit for the directories.
I have seen some say no to do that and some say its ok. I think if you rewrite the article so its unique you will have one article for your site and one to post
what I would do would be to 1st post the articcle on your site, then change the title for every article marketing site you post it to, this will help combat duplicate content
I personally would just submit them to article directories and not post them on your own website. You would get plenty of links and not have to worry about duplicate content on your own website. If you submit your own website content as articles, the search engines may give the article directories credit for the content. This often happens with ezinearticles.com since they have high pr. Try to get better quality content to post on your own website.
