That's what this thread is about, I just have the balls to call a spade a spade.

The reputation system breeds it, it will not go away. The system is degrading and insulting, it has no means of integrety. :/

I suggest you never visit SearchEngineWatch. That place is full of p***ies who rep you red any chance they can get. They leave their explanations but never a name. I believe the repuation system is not a bad idea but it should be programmed that the repper's name will always show up. It would add some validity to the reps and comments given if nothing else.

Agreed, that would be some improvement. I bet the reds would go down. But having the reputaion take away privledges is, as I so pointedly said already, god damn childish. I would think Shanw would get it if enough adults pointed it out. :/

As for that other forum the solution is easy, don't go there. There are too many free places with intellegent well mannered folks to exchange quality information for free without the pussyness.

Digital Point is the fastest growing webmaster forum for a reason, it is sort of like the "Wild Wild West" of forums in more ways than one.

Folks can come here and their comments will not be censored, I have seen folks insult Shawn directly and he let the comments stand in the threads.

How many forum administrators do you know that would put up with that and let those comments stay in the record

Another thing is this, don't ever expect Shawn to do away with the reputation system (I think he could change it for the better as I mentioned in my prior post) because it has become part of the fabric of Digital Point for some odd reason and you don't tinker with success.

This policy (free speech on DP) lets you guys say what you wish about other forums or administrators on other forums or even companies in the industry that you have a gripe with without being censored.

I think that the reputation system has caused many not to post their true thoughts in many cases and that is one of the major drawbacks of the system, it can produce an automatic censoring of content when folk think in the back of their mind about how their comments may affect their forum reputation

You also have folks voting to be voting so they can pad each others reputation back and fourth, I tried to give Minstrel postive rep yesterday but the system would not let me because I don't use it enough.

It has never stopped me from posting what I want to express but I think it does affect others, in most cases members are intelligent and I have had nasty debates with GTech and others and never have seen them give me bad rep. because they enjoy the debate and participating and creating good threads here.

Using the reputation system anonomously is no example of free speech. It's just a pussy way of playing God.

Take away the punishment factor and there is no reason to use it. It's just an ego trip, I can't beat you in a debate, so I'll say you suck.

That's true. Mad props to Super Shawn for the way he runs these forums. I think they are seriously one of the best most open forums on the internet. It's a pleasure to be able to post here. And the main factor which makes it so, is because you can speak your mind without worrying it will get deleted/edited/censored. Well, thats if, you're like me, and really couldn't give a toss about getting red rep because that's the worst that will happen on these forums.. And anyway I think that if you post enough, other member's get used to your sense of humour or style of posting and you dont get so much bad red. I think Anthony is a prime example of this. Look how he has managed to turn it around. Because people warmed to him, accepted him and respected him for not changing and becomming a sheep just to get positive rep. I'm the same..when I first came here I got SO MANY red boxes on my User CP. Honestly, I was like wtf? These people must have their heads inserted way too far up their asses. But as it turns out, you could not wish to meet a bunch of nicer, humerous people. And I was probably just a shock to the system for awhile. I never changed the way I posted, I was in your face, borderline rude, sometimes sexually grafic, flirty, and openly dumb and I still am. I think people accept it after awhile. I don't get red rep quite so often now, But when I do i figure it's from lame assholes that really don't know me or what I'm about. And that's fine. I would probably make quite a good famous person, as i'm quite thick skinned and just think to myself either a) it's constructive critism or b) ah so what, any publicity is good publicity. bad or good. whoops here I go waffeling off on one again.....

That's my problem, too. I have never given anyone bad rep on here as far as I can honestly remember. If i had such a problem with someone I would either PM them about it, stating openly why I didn't like his/her post, or I would just think to myself 'This is the internet, don't take things to literally/seriously'. Plus seeing as I don't very often leave the general chat area, there aren't a copious amount of amazingly good or amazingly shit posts to rate.
However, credit given, where credit's due..If I like a post, I will take the time to give that person some positive feedback..But I find that I can't because I also, like AC, don't use it enough on a day to day basis to be able to. It always says I can't give that person more rep. and I don't want to go round giving rep points willy nilly just so I can give that one person a good rep. So that point sucks a little.

Anyway none of the above made much sense, or was written in a decent way. But hey, it was probably still more interesting than AC's blog. ;) :D

Like I said before, GTech and I get real nasty with each other and I have only given him good reputation because he posts his thoughts, I never agree with his stuff but I have come to like him simply because he gets in the ring and fights and I respect that.

To my knowledge he has never given me bad rep. in any of the nasty threads we have fought in.

I don't know. Even if the negative rep part was disabled, I would probably still use the positive rep part as an extra thimbs up for certain comments/posts.

As for whether it stays or goes, I wouldn't be teribly upset either way. I think it does serve a purpose in that someone who comes in and basically acts like a jerk can be buried if enough people are upset by what s/he's doing -- since at least some of those in recent memory have given up and gone elsewhere once they realized they weren't going to get sig links, I think it probably does help to some extent.

Yes but is that what we want, folks to leave

I think that we should vote on if a new member gets sig. links versus reputation, in that way if the DP members like a new members posts we give them sig. links.

If not they don't get them, that is much more logical than giving them after 10 posts.

Sometimes... either knock off the crap or leave. I can think of a couple of people who I've been glad to see leave in recent memory. (I can think of a couple I wish would leave but haven't as well...)

Yikes! Sorry... I'll try to be more discrete about it in future.

To think that Shawn has got more content out of this reputation subject than about any other, then we want him to do away with it.

We really are kidding ourselves guys and gals :p :D

Is that someone who's name Begins with an M and ends in an A? :D

I will never forget my first day here. Minnie was so scary that his comments made me leave for a week or two.

Now I am Back, and one day I will get my revenge. REVENEGE i say *mwuahahahaaaaaaaaa* [IMG]

But for me, honestly, there is not one person on here that I would like to see go. All of you bring your own personality and charisma to this place. It's great. We are all so different, yet all get along relativly well.

Sure for a young person like yourself a forum bug like Minstrel can be quite intimidating Mella.

Just ask the "Rat Pack" about Minstrel... :p

In addition messing with the Chairman of the "DP reputation co-op network" can be quite scary also.

No. And no more hints... ;)

Yeah, right... you haven't been out of here for more than about 3 hours at a shot since you arrived :D

If I remember correctly, Michael Jackson was in there singing that song, wasn't he? Not sure he had the same vision in mind the rest of them had...

Seriously, joking aside, he really was. I was baffled at his rudeness towards me when I haden't done anything terribly wrong. Ah so I shat all over his serious thread, so sue me. :p

I remember you sticking up for us, and that's why I will AlWaYzZzZ Lub JOO!

Otherwise I would probably think like most people, that you are a complete headcase that lives in a trailor posting his crap all over the forum, even though no one cares.

Only kidding. I know AC blushes when he reads these things, but he is great. I would be lost on this forum without him. He is like my internet idol. ha ha ha!

Your reasoning is flawed, that creates a mob mentality and a group can move against a member just for any old crap reason and there is no reasonable part of the system to offset that so the targeted member could recovery from it.

As I've said before on live links, we are punished, not the so called punished member. Instead of clicking, we then have to copy and paste to view their links.

Your counter will be that if we do that to them they aint worth talking to, but that's you opinion, please don't tell me who to like and who to read.

Absolutly useless content if you consider yourself a professional and this a professional forum.

I can hire teenagers cheap to create that kind of content on any forum on any topic. :/
