Hi, is it possible that if I own this domain
    example.com
then I would like to redirect
    1.example.com
to another host so that my friend can use that subdomain?
    Thanks

It is quite simple in fact.
It's a matter of DNS configuration.
Go to your hosting panel and look for "DNS" or just contact the customer support.

Yes, it's possible. Contact your host, or if you've got cPanel you can use DNS/MX entries.

The exact description of the option will depend on your control panel but you need to go into the DNS manager for your domain and create a "CNAME" or "A" record. The owners of the host your friend is using will be able to tell you which you need and what value it should have.

NB: Some hosting panels (e.g. Direct Admin) have an option to stop users changing their DNS, because this is one of the most popular way for end users to shoot themselves in the foot. It's possible that your hosting company may have turned this on; if so you'll need to ask them to unlock you.
