Possible Tip to Beat Google Penguin in The Short Term

Here are the results of an experiement I done last Thursday a couple of days after a blog I own dropped right down about 4 or 5 pages in serps after Penguin update..

Now for this blog it must be noted is not my main business, so I wasn't too bothered if it tanked completely or not by doing this, so it was just a test..

I seen somewhere in an article about Google now using bounce rate as ranking factor, and got me thinking how it may possibly be one of the deciding factors in the new updates.. IE.. if the site is participating in spammy techniques, is the traffic relevant and using the site and not leaving right away??..

The blog I tested has a 71% overall bounce rate.. It has a mix of unique and copied content of about 70 / 30 in favour of unique.. and a fair few shady links..

So anyway.. I own a few domains with traffic which I have parked or forwarded to various other sites.. I looked into a few of them and checked Alexa with them. One of them had Alexa rating of around 5 million odd.. stats said around 30 - 40 visits per day average.. keywords on Alexa search queries were losely related to my blog. So...

I created 2 new pages on the blog related to the keywords reported as highest traffic ones to the domain in Alexa..
On the main page I created I linked to the 2nd new page from a nice large link at the foot of a 500 word article on the topic.
Halfway down the new page I created a small div / bordered box which broke up the article with "You may also like these pages".. and dropped in 4 links to the older main pages on the blog which had dropped since Penguin update..

I then forwarded the traffic from the old domain to the newly created page on the blog..

The thought behind this was to get incoming traffic for a related keyword, and try push the new visits to other important areas of the site..

Saturday morning I checked the stats on just the new page.. it had a reasonably low bounce rate of 42%

Checked on my Google keywords today.. and the main keywords and my results have recovered around 80 - 90%.. Im down a couple of places on where I was originally.. but certainly not down several pages where I was before..

Now, I'm not sure of doing this long term.. my thoughts were to see if it helps recover whilst I build up decent further content and get some crappy links removed to be more in line with what Google wants..

It may be possible to do this with some very targetted traffic packages where you can pick keywords too.. but for the record I haven't tried this..

So.. either this has helped.. or.. Google has quickly reversed some of the penalty I got.. which I doubt as another site I own is still way down..

Make of it what you will.. No advice intended..Just posting the result of experiment..

    Regards DS

Yes I guess so, but just buying losely targetted traffic and pointing it to your homepage is not going to help..

From my experience with most targetted traffic it tends to be just served as pop unders which increases your bounce rate..

Nice idea, maybe it just enforces the fact that the more time people spend on your site the better it is, and this is liked by Google.

    Quality content I suppose :)

Why would you buy traffic? It just costs you more in hosting and doesn't actually *do* anything ...

I have 31% bounce rate on a website and it is still penalized. I know that 31% is not a small bounce rate but it depends a lot of the type. I also have a blog with 80% bounce rate and it slighty increased in traffic.

Maybe it's horses for courses.. what works for some may not be the solution for others.
In my case may have been a way to reduce what was possibly a spammy site with high bounce rate..

This is a bit of a silly post. Isn't the point of SEO optimizing for keywords to improve ranking WITHOUT paying for it? I mean, if you're going to be dishing out dough for traffic you may as well just pay a professional SEO'r while you're at it.

At least, that's how this seems to me. MY 2c
