Possible Directories Subcat

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by Alucard, Sep 13, 2005.

I sent this idea to TOPS30 and he suggested I post here to get feedback.

My primary interest in this forum is the Directories forum. I see it being used for two things, first, discussion about directories, and second, promotion of new directories. I think that each has a different, but heavily-overlapping audience.

So as a suggestion for a possible improvement in the forum, what about the idea of adding a sub-forum to the directories forum which is specifically designed for advertising new directories? That would split that off from the discussions ABOUT directories.

    Thanks for reading.

@Alucard; Same here, like the web directory threads alot!

I suggest making a sticky about the web directory FAQ, and a seperate sub-forum thread for suggesting new web directories.

Yeah, I like that idea, too. 90% of that forum now is advertising. It would be nice to split that off into it's own forum.

    Mike,

I see this becoming a disaster with people replying to such introductions with "thanks, i just submitted 2 of my sites!", "you are welcome, your sites are approved! anyone else?" all in one big thread with many many directories. I guess their mods are cleaning up such comments?? It seems pretty clean over there

What about spinning the sub-category into "Directories With Less Than 1,000" entries? It's tough to just say "new" directories because "new" is subjective. At least if you set a specific number, it has an easily identifiable threshold.

OK, that is a valid point. I guess I am just trying to separate the announcements-type threads from the discussion-type threads.

I don't like the idea of separating based on size, mostly because I think that the same issues apply to large and small directories.

    Does that make more sense?

I would like the size split. Personally I believe that 99/100 directories are rubbish. They install the free script and accept links. If you don't count anchor text, you regularly find directories with literally 7 words of content on the homepage. That has 'useless' written all over it in my book. Bigger directories at least sat out the first slow period and are more likely to have traffic. To be honest, I don't think Google counts directories much at all so I'd submit for traffic and spidering only. And a 1000+ directory is bound to have more traffic that the new ones.

    Hence me liking the split...

Either way will be fine but I tend to agree with Alucard on this. Size of the directory does not mean much to me. I don't really care how many entries incrawler.com or abilogic.com have. I can see that those directories will be around 5 years from now (professional look, comprehensive category structure, high PR, reasonable rates, etc). These are not built-for-adsense sites meant to make a quick buck

I would call the new subcat "Announce your directory" or something similar.

I dion't think size makes sense... what do you do if a directory moves from one cat to another? PITA... more forum maintenance.

Besides, it doesn't address the primary issue raised by Alucard, which is the separation of "Announcing forums accepting submissions or words to that effect" versus "General forum issues" -- much like the current Google forum is supposed to be about Google the engine, not specific sites with Google issues.

It does look better than any directories category I have ever seen on any forum. Makes so much more sense to seperate new directories from discussions about well-established ones.

I like the solution that was implemented as well. I just hope that there is no confusion as to what goes where from members whose first language is not English

EDIT: Solicitations & Announcements solves that problem :)

Okay, split directories into 2 additional sub-categories ("Solicitations & Announcements" and "ODP / DMOZ").

Thank god for inline moderation in vBulletin 3.5 is all I can say. :)
