Position Preferences - Good for CTR?

In the relatively short time I've been using Adwords, my experience seems to be that when I activate position preferences, I typically get fewer clicks and better CTR. If I accept any ad position, the result seems to be poor CTR, which causes me to pay more...

In other words, position preferences seem to be worth it, since it directly affects CTR. Would any of you veterans agree with this?

Thanks! That's helpful. Do you have a range of positions you aim for, i.e., 1-7?

It all depends on the product, the typical customer etc.

As always, test, test, test ...

Top position costs most, lower positions reduce ctr, so average is better, for example 2 to 6.
