It seems to be one of those things most people don't like to discuss.. but I read alot earlier about claims that porn does a lot of harm in society. It is also a HUGE industry... Anyone care to share the views on the subject? Heres a few articles I found that are against (and biased) pornography (to help stir up conversation)
To make it even more interesting lets go another step further: Prostitution. It's legal in a lot of places throughout the world but illegal nearly everywhere in the U.S. .... any comments??
That is a very common thing to say "going in the porn industry is ok because people are using it and it would be hypocritical to say anything against it". Well I disagree, people watch it because it's easy to access, would the world be a better place if it wasn't for so much porn online?
Well that raises many other questions, you could say the same about cigarettes, alcohol, guns, gambling, fast food, etc... By better place do you mean freindlier? I'm sure taking all those things away in the long term would have a positive effect on crime statistically, but at the same time you'd be restricting things I believe the large majority of Americans participate in.
I think whether you get into porn or not needs to be a personal decision/conviction. Opinions definitely get influenced by religious beliefs. I don't think that the porn industry is a good thing, but I'm not going to sit here pretending I have never been on a site. I just think that there is a difference between using something and actively promoting it to the masses.
Prostitution in the US is not as illegal as our government would have us believe. Just pick up any phonebook in any major city and you will find escort agencies, which are very expensive. Do you think the government isn't aware of escort agencies? Of course they are. But why do they arrest street walkers more often? Simple. Women who prostitute themselves in the street don't pay a cut of their earnings to Uncle Sam. Escort agencies pay their cut to the IRS. So the IRS leaves them alone. The reason why prostitutes in the street are arrested is not because the government cares about morality or stopping the spread of stds. They care about making $$$. And the government hates people who are self employed for the most part and who make money "under the table". They want to be able to tax everything. I'm not condoning prostitution. Actually to be honest I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Their are women out there making more money per week than many people here. Some women have even worked at brothels/strip clubs and then went on to go to college.
The tax issue might be something to do with it but I truly don't think that's why street prostitutes get arrested and targeted. The reason they tend to get busted so often is because a street prostitute tends to be at the very bottom of the ladder. They are street walking because they have hit rock bottom and this is usually because of Class A drug addictions -- crack, heroin, cocaine; so they walk the streets to earn their money. Like the upstanding citizens they are, the drug dealers always make sure they are close to the herd. So wherever you get street prostitution you get drug dealers and associated crime. Not to mention all the 'Johns' who start migrating and hovering around the area. Kinda brings a neighbourhood down.
You sound like a man that knows his prostitutes so I'd have to agree. The reason why street hookers are arrested more then others is because they will do anything for a low amount of money. The others are paying for advertising and have some standards and procedures for public safety. The street hookers are also public "eyesores". People are driving by and seeing them so the police have to deal with it.
What are you going to tell your son when he askes why that brightly coloured young lady is waiting for the bus 50 yards away from the bus stop? That would be one of my main concerns in the future. And total tax evasion gets on my nerves, as it also implies getting away with most of the licensing rules and stuff. Also, they are a constant danger for the drivers, they purposely distract men, which at least at first are tricked by their nature. They attract all sorts of criminals, as suppliers, clients, "managers", collegues. STD are another issue. And it's easy money, which is not good for anyone nor for the society. It's easy in the sense that you don't NEED any skill, just a body and a price. Hard earned money is better spent and spread throughout the economy. It should be allowed away from public view, for those desperate people, men and women, who are so messed up that they need to turn to prostitutes.
yo-yo wrote: Yo-yo i hope yo realize that every addiction is an addiction on it's own and holds various consequences regarding a specific addiction? Because i strongly get the feeling you are putting every addiction on the same level. Maybe i misunderstood you. Nothing wrong with porn or prostitution, it gives a lot of people there needed outlet.
There is a difference between giving people what they're searching for and throwing things in people's faces. If you search for porn, go ahead, find it, whatever ... more power to you. but I don't like targetting those who are not and playing on people's weaknesses. That's what I have most of a problem with.
I agree with you mike. If i surf the net i wouldn't want to be confronted with porn pop ups or what ever and if i am walking down the street i wouldn't want to be constantly harrassed by some dope prossies. Keep prostitution contained to a certain area and let people make their own choices.
I cant see anything against porn as long as its decent. If its decent = natural i cant see the reason why people should not see it. At the end of the day thats nature itself. Thats what we are designed for. Fetish/Hardcore porn is debatable however.
Couldn't agree more. At the end of the day is when I look at porn, too. I, also, sometimes get told by girls and tell them that I was built for porn.
