    what are the most popular directories? could you give me some example? what kind of scripts do they use for their sites?

    How would you define "popular" ?? Is it one that is popular with webmasters who do nothing more than submit/spam sites to because it's designed to manipulate search engine rankings, or one that is popular with real world users who actual use the directory for it's intended purpose?

    There are two types of users
    a) people wanting to find information - does anyone seriously use a directory anymore?
    b) people wanting to build backlinks for their sites

    which type of user are you talking about when you say "popular"?

    Depends on what you consider to be "popular". There are several that are popular in terms of their notoriety and or popularity. Still others are popular due to their staying power. Other's because they product results...

    I haven't use a directory even once in my life while searching for anything... I'm amazed, that Google still counts backlinks from them...
