I'm still looking for votes on my poll (already have 49, need about 50 more). Since you've already read the thread title, you already know what it's all about. Be a part of this poll and let us know what your leading source of traffic is by casting your vote in the link below. I will be using this information for an article I will be writing in the future. Thanks!

this is an UTMOST unhappy form of poll as it allows NO relevant reply and overall result

a good webmaster always has several key sources of traffic that may vary so little that to neglect exact percentages / ranking simply leads to a totally invalid final result of such a poll

i have a substantial direct traffic
combined with a number of different major SE such as
    G, Y, MSN, ask, ..
plus a number of social bookmarking, stumble, etc
plus a large number of generic links from various forums, blogs, etc
    plus some top sites, etc
plus some minor directories or niche directories
plus a significant number of visitors from my 5 RSS feeds
plus I do ZERO $ advertisement
    NO link farming
    NO banner exchange

while G is the largest single component - approx in the same % range as direct requests - G has far less than 50% of all - hence even if any of the major sources completely drop out for whatever reason - it has no significant influence on my site nor my personal wellbeing nor revenue nor my life or happiness.

I am fully aware that far too many depend on a single major source of traffic / revenue
but I am also aware that most likely MANY of the really successful webmasters / site owners have like me many very similar shares from totally different directions to add up to the total traffic

if ever you want to create a useful result, you would have to totally repeat all poll with multiple choice and a totally new revised format - to create data of true value in decision making for others / new site owners.

Thanks for the advice. I really like how you went on to more details regarding WHERE EXACTLY the traffic could come from. But on my poll, I have based it on the categories that Google Analytics show on my site and others. Those you see on the poll are the root-categories of traffic sources.

Definitely search engines, and more specifically Google.

I have no #1 leading source. It's ads and articles all over the place.

My own email list:) Nothing compares to it.

Otherwise viral traffic, forums, giveaways, safelists, all work if done correctly.
