Hi DP members, I've had loads of fun browsing this forum. When I see what some of these sites are fetching, I just got me curious....really curious. Firstly, I want to emphasize that I really enjoyed creating websites. No adsense, no money, I still had loads of fun creating sites. You can see that I've kept my personal site, buildcontent.com, from 2001 to now. WHOIS (No selling for this one!!)

This year, I just got serious and have every intention of making a living out of creating websites. 3 weeks ago, I developed an article posting engine and started www.sg-web-design.com I'm sure some DP members would have remembered seeing it somewhere :)

Here's how the site is doing:
No. of articles: 577 (400 posted by me, the rest by other writers)
No. of writers: about 50 (view)
    Uniques: 50/day
    Page views: 400/day
    Pages indexed by Google: >100
    PR0: Site is too new
Add to favourites: 66.8% (this is interesting)
    Adsense so far: $6.97 (0.30/day)
Traffic from search engine trickling in slowly. Had a few uniques coming in from Google and msn.

So the question is, how much is this site worth? I'm trying to get a good feel of the price of the sites here, so please help and give your honest opinion. How much would you pay for a site like this?

This is just a poll. Site is not for sale at the moment.

Most sites are valued at a roughly 10 to 12x monthly revenue. Then you add for unique content, visitors, PR etc.

So assuming your AdSense revenue goes to 10 dollars for the month you could expect most folks to value your site at somewhere around 100 to 120 dollars.

There are some cases where great content is not being monetized properly or where the subject matter of a site meshes nicely with someone's other sites and so prices could increase based on factors that may not be readily understood.

Absolutely agree. I wouldn't think of selling it, at least not right now when I'm having so much fun growing it. Maybe one day when I decide to move on to the next project though...just maybe. By then adsense should be doing better...so I might as well just keep it. :p

10-12 seems a bit high to me. I think that's what most people ask but in reality they end up selling for 6 mo revenue. Of course it all depends on the site, so general guidlines can't really apply to all sites.

I agree - I think sites can only be based on 10-12 months revenue if revenue has been stable for at least 2 years. If site is under 2 years old and revenue is unstable, 4x8 months profit on site - averaged out over the age of the site. If less then six months old - 2-3 months average revenue. But alot of other factors than revenue naturally apply. Really traffic levels - natural search ranking - domain name - category of site - backlinks (less rented links).

I've been running between DP and sitepoint. You guys are right. The value of the site depends of many factors. These include:
    1) no. of members (very important apparently)
    2) traffic (it all boils down to page views)
    3) uniqueness of backend engine
    4) uniqueness of content
    5) uniqueness of design
    6) back links
    7) nature of incoming traffic (i.e. links, search engines, etc)
    8) potential for growth
    9) potential for revenue
    10) current revenue
    11) domain name
    12) condition of website (no bugs!)

The 10 or 12 months is a general rule of thumb but I wouldn't rely too much on it as active sites tend to grow pretty quickly and the last 3 months revenue may differ greatly from the last 10 months.

That's probably better at #1. Number of members is not an issue at all if it's a content site with no forum.

It's revenue, revenue, revenue. It's very rare that a site sells based solely on non-revenue factors.
