How about a FAQ for good username choosing practice?

    1. Don't choose a domain name.

    2. Don't choose a company name or a trademark.

    3. Use a capital letter at the start.

    4. Don't use your surname if you're planning to get married and change it.

    5. Don't choose anything embarrasing or rude.

    6. Don't use a name related to topical events that won't make sense in a year or two (ie, VoteKerry or some such).

    7. Sea life is cool.

Hey shawn can i suggest a better alternative than coming up with a reason to get username changed?

If so, here is what i propose might seem dumb but for a big forums this seems quite possible.

    1. Create a newusername using the Admin panel , with the username desired by the user.
    2. Set his reputation, trader, posts count numbers to his old username.
    3. Remove permissions from old username to post , but able to check his pm box (cause still old users might send him pms)
    4. Change the old usernames title stating that his new username is so and so.
    5. Change the date of registration of the new username you create so he has the same reputation power as his old one, if the reputation system uses age based system for rep power.

I think above steps will not produce and sql load whatsoever. Only issue will be that this users posts will be gone, and he would have to tell the users looking forward for trade to tell his old user name, which they can do a background check on.

    Just my 2 pennies.

That seems awfully labour-intensive, and it would create a lot of unnecessary confusion.

I did not find it hard using vb's admin panel at all. So whats better ? "No username changes and if any crashing of sql server" or " a bit of work done by staff" ?

    Cheers

A few people do here ! Probably because of domain change, etc, etc but they're usually new members.. But I agree.. after "Establishing" on DP.... usernames shouldn't be changed :p (people won't recognize you!.. maybe)

oh i agree, but why would you want to change name? lets face it, you choose the name when you register, so i think thats what you should keep, no matter what.
people can abuse the old name then change it and no-one would know it's the same person giving you crap again.

I think that is a fair policy. As a webmaster, I know all about servers getting overloaded and all that and with a database of so many members it would probably be hard on the server to complete such a query.

Thankfully, I chose a name I am happy with, and hopefully will be happy with for a long while yet.

    Hey Shawn,

If I sell my business and my business name goes with it. Will I be allowed to change my username so the new owner can use mine?

Sorry I had not thought of asking before.

    Col :)

After reading this I found a good reason.... May I change my username because I'm planning to sell my domain name?

    :D Jokes aside :D

I believe the real problem with the always growing database is finding a solution toward future.

If there is query problem right now, what can we expect in one or two more years?

I know some sites purge old threads, which is a waste of useful information and I wouldn't like it implemented here, but perhaps if someone volunteer to work on a copy of the database to create DP1 (posts made on 2004) DP2 (2005 posts) and so on to alleviate the db load. Members could be managed from a central database connecting all so no need for individual updates or duplicity on members.

I know that would be a tedious and complex task to achieve, but just an idea

If this happens to anyone, he better go and work on his site rather than asking here to change there DP names. Google is showing your complete site is under Supplemental. (4 pages cached, 2 are in supplemental).

yea i know the site is horrible!
its my attempt to make my own parked page!
cost me nothing & took no time!
have no plans for the domain anymore! :(
kinda did but now Im over my head in things i want to do and have plans for!
so thought id get the pr up and maybe sell it!(unless i get tyme and skillz)
got pr2 without money & not much tyme!! (b4 dp)
and all affiliate links!there was not one piece of text other than the name of the site and page names etc!
site was mostly all code for ads!
i guess thats why this shows up in google when do site:
since i got a pr i have added sum articles etc nothing special! I very rarely do anything to this site got others i like more!
its on free hosting (no ads) and its not a typical ftp type of so i dont have much seo control!(its kinda like a blog)
I dont know much about anything just html tho Im trying to learn it all mostly php cgi, javascript and seo)tho dont know where 2 start!(any1 wanna help?)

I mainly want to change the name if i sell the site!
tho i don't really like posting under the name being the site looks so bad!
so would like to change it! to a more general personal name not a domain name! that was dumb of me!
tho i didn't think i would be on this site as much as i am!
i check dp more than my emails!
