Debunking The Poker Myths : #1 - Big Pairs don't hold up in multiway pots. In one minor sense this is true, that is that as more players enter the pot the likelyhood of AA winning decreases but from a much more important perspective, that of expected value, it is false. It is important to remember that in limit poker especially you do not have to win every pot to make money; in fact you should be winning between 20-50% of the pots you are in at showdown; if you are winning more than that it means you are probably folding too many winners. When the pot becomes extremely large, say 20 BB your hand only has to be good 1 time in 20 to make that 'crying call'. In limit poker paying off is simply a cost of doing business. It is extremely foolish to call down to the river in hopes of improving but then fail to make that final call in a big pot with even a weak hand. #2 - You can't beat players who don't know how to play This myth is extremely common amongst inexperienced poker players because they have an inaccurate view of how you win money playing poker. To these neophytes poker is a contest of skill; who can bluff the best or keep the straightest face. This is of course, as many have found out to their detriment, false. Poker is a contest of many things; patience and emotional discipline being paramount. Knowledge of the game is also a crucial determining factor in whether you win or lose. Player's who don't know how to play often bluff large amounts of money on weak hands and call extremely large bets on low precentage draws. Often the reason why hopeful victors lose to inexperienced players is because they themselves are inexperienced and make many errors from a 'Thoery of Poker' perspective (that is every action you make that you would not make if the cards were face up costs you money).
