No offense, but that's just not true... If it is all just luck, why do you continuously see the same faces at the end of major tournaments?
Because they know how to cheat? I used to do a lot of sleight of hand and cheat at poker, it can be done!
There's no cheating at those tournaments... the better players know the odds... they also sometimes have the ability to get a "read" on a player at a table... on top of that, they're more able to know what to play pre-flop, and what not to waste their money on...
The top players make a profit over a long period of time because they take advantage of their opponents' mistakes. It is a game of skill, but unskilled players can win in the short term because it is a game of high variance.
Its a game of odds. You need skill to take read your opponents and take odds into account. When you start playing odds you know you will win overall because everyone has around the same bit of luck. How comes the same people win the same tournaments over and over again? Are they just lucky 10, 20, 60 years running? No, they have the skill to make the right decisions at the right time when the odds are not against them. I'm not the best player in the world but I'm good enough to make a living out of poker. In fact some of you might have seen me on TV at the beginning of the month finishing 10th and walking away with £2100. Shamless link for those who want to get better at poker: my poker blog
Yeah, too fast... I have a hard time keeping up with the increasing blinds... I like cash games where I can sit, relax, play, and slowly win enough to smile and keep the girlfriend happy
I went for both because if you pick up a good hand you need to know how to play it. The luck part is getting the good hand
Well it takes a lot of skill to be competitve but I have seen the best of them win or lose by the luck of the draw.
I believe its about skill. No matter how can bad hand you have, if you got skill you can make your opponents fold. But yes luck is also there, like getting a straight flush at the river flop
Definitely both. You have to get lucky to get the right cards, but must be skillful in how to proceed from there.
I agree 100% with that... I remember a court in the UK about a year ago declared that poker was a game of luck, and that you therefore needed a license to host tourneys. I was like WTF, yes it's true that if you consistently get good hands, and your chances of winning naturally increase. But you can also equally be dealt sh*t hands and still win the pot.
