Anyone know where I can find a database on travel points of interest not for a GPS system but for a directory or any web app for that matter? Something to import into sequel maybe. I need to fill a site with this type of content and don't know where to get it.
I know your not looking for GPS POIs, but they may be your best bet for a web app anyway.. as you can use the GPS coordinates from your database with something like the Google Maps API and display the locations of the POIs. If that sounds like what you want, check out the GPSPassion.com Forums. People there share POI lists, a lot of times with CSV files that can easily be imported into an SQL database.
Thank you for that information, that is a great starting point and incredibly helpful. Is it even possible to get a database that has all poi in US like the GPS systems, or will it have to be broken up into categories regardless? i.e. My zip code is 44748, what poi are around that area code regardless of category? OR are there companies that gather information for you to put in a database? Anyway, thanks for the info!!!!!
I've never had to look for them, but I'm sure there are companies out there that make a business out of selling POI databases for commercial purposes that have already been categorized. I found PointX which sells a POI database for Great Britain.. someone must be doing something similar for the US. If your looking for free, however, I think your going to wind up having to compile your own larger database from what is available.
