PNG With trasparent - Do you avoid using these?

I've just stated creating a new web site,
I'm trying to support IE6 and up, I'm not sure what the current % of IE6 user is (when comparing to all browsers), I think its less than 8% ??? (I could be very wrong)
When I check my web site in IE6, the PNGs with transparent background look like they have a white background (this is probably very well known)

    I wanted to know,

do people generally avoid using PNGs with a transparent background to support IE6,
or have people generaly stopped caring about IE6?

As far as I know, you can't avoid PNGs just to compensate for a browser. Instead, there is a PNGfix hack (Don't remember where it is) which gracefully fixes the issue.
And a lot of designers are dropping support for a browser that is 11 years old, you should do the same because we as designers should be more focused on current technologies. Fixing your site for IE6 is like giving IE6 users another chance of not changing the browser.

I've stopped developing for IE6. However, when I was still worried about it, I used a script called pngFix.js with success.

Not sure about other people, I have dropped IE6 long time back. :)
If dieing to support IE6, using a PNG hack javascript is best idea.

As others have said, there is a fix to get PNG images working in IE6, see this link http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/. But honestly, as many companies move further away from IE6, you also might want to consider dropping support for it.

As everybody mentioned there's a fix to use transparent PNG images in your design, but actually you shouldn't waste your time on fixing IE6 issues because according to w3schools, there is only 2.3% of the internet users use IE6. So why waste your time on 2.3% when you have 97.7% to care about?!

World needs to stop supporting IE6. Even support for IE7 should be stopped.

Don't focus on a browser that's obsolete already. Look at the big picture.

Well that would be a mistake, and even IE8 or 9 can display some weird stuff so it's good to test with it. Personally when I build a site I test it in: Firefox, Chrome, IE9, iPhone Safari. I think that's plenty.
