png vs gif with internet explorer users

As you may know Internet Explorer does not show transparent .png files as good as Mozilla Firefox and other browsers do. The question I have is how should one handle this?

Could I use CSS to show image.gif instead of image.png to the IE lusers?

I noticed that the .png transparency shows correctly if I use Indexed colors but then the image looks very ugly also...

Any tips or pointers how to solve this are very welcomed.
