I have not seen this discussion before, but in fact is annoying pm for an URL.

I tend to believe another reason for not posting such URLs is because such addresses are not other thing that affiliate links

Of course anyone can find out your website URL by just sending you or them a PM and there is really no way you can tell if the person is actually interested on the website if they just asked for the URL, I thought that was common sense.

The thing is, if you include the URL in your sales thread everyone is just free to click the URL and find out about your site and some sellers just doesnt want that for whatever reason they may have (business, marketing wise etc). The creator of this thread said he closed the thread when he see those "PM me for the URL" threads and I know some people do it too so that eliminates those curiousity clicks or visits on the sellers website.

I think some sellers also doesnt want everyone to know that they own the website they are selling, just like buyers bids and buy a website privately.

I know this can be an advantage for the scammers and frauds but im just stating why the honest and legit sellers do it. Personally I could care less if a rule is enforce against this, doesnt matter for me.

Yeah, they also delete you comment or ban you if you warn them of a possible scam, that was way back though before the "marketplace upgrade" but yeah it's their policy to always include the URL.

That's a completely different reason to what you proposed in msg 34. Are you agreeing that protecting from SEs is not really a valid reason to hide URLs?

Most webmasters are aware they can
    1. Image the URL
    2. Obscure the URL e.g., my=removethis=site.com
    3. Provide hints to the URL e.g., 16th result in Yahoo for "my search term"
    4. Post a link not here but on some other page they control and link to that page instead
    5. Use other methods to fool SEs and bots

Or is it OK to seek to bump threads by asking for "PM me please" posts?

Why the hell don't the buyers just PM the seller and ask for the url rather than posting in the thread?

You're entitled to your opinion, of course. Heck, many sellers actually have the site in their signatures and yet they say, "Post for URL"! A hint could be as simple as saying, "The myspace site in my signature". But maybe that's too challenging for some.

For others my personal opinion is that it's more ridiculous to lose sales opportunities unnecessarily. If I'm looking for a site now and I'm free to do some research on it now, making me PM you, wait 24 hours for the URL etc., is just plain ridiculous - I may be your only BIN buyer and I've spent the money elsewhere by then.

"PM me for URL" does annoy me to be quite honest but then lets take this case. I own site "A" and theres a person who I know here knows my site is f*cked up somewhere (maybe penalized by Google). I would definetely not like to screw up my site sale by this guy....so I wont display the URL here and instead say "PM me for the URL" :p.

This is just an example and something I thought off...there might be lots of such reasons.

People do not comprehend the meaning of "PM ME"!

I run link sales and I have a "PM me for paypal"
And yet, people will post in the thread, "pm me for payment information".
I just started ignoring those people who can not read and comprehend a simple statement to pm me for paypal.

Having now read this entire thread, I see one reason to keep the web url private that has not yet been mentioned. Many DPers are direct competitors and some don't play so nice, and I've read about people losing their adsense accounts by being click bombed and in other cases having their site hacked. So if you PM your info to a finite number of people, at least you can narrow down the list of potential offenders if something like that happens.

That having been said, it IS annoying to have to wade through "PM me for [blank] in thread after thread.

Its fine to keep the url private but its not fine for the buyers to post pointless comments.

They should just PM the seller directly.

    No, not me.

Some comments are pointless and some are quite legitimate. All I am saying is that I would prefer people PM'ed the seller directly if all they are saying is "PM me".

In SP the seller is allowed to delete posts in his site-for-sale thread but that would be a bit hard to implement here.

It is the case that some people who pose as buyers are not even buyers and enter the thread just to disrupt it. If they collectively choose to NOT post but to PM the seller and flood him with PMs then maybe sellers will find a way to disclose URLs in threads (as someone suggested earlier).

I this topic has been already discussed and blah, blah, blah

How or what for it is rated?

I believe that rating worthless threads is commonly done by topic starters, otherwise, why valuable threads not?

If the post is pointless to you, use the triangle and report the post.

I agree, posting just one liners like "I pm'ed you for the url" is useless and pointless.
If enough get reported, and enough infractions are passed out, maybe that will end?
Or make a sticky to say, quit that crap now!

Its such a common issue that I doubt the mods (and the posters) would thank somebody for reporting a large number of posts in the B/S/T area.:)

This is true. Unless it's some type of scam is it really a big enough deal to create board rules against it? I think the best bet would be to lock the thread after the OP if you really want it stopped... this way everything has to be done in PM and nobody can bump the thread. However this will take a lot of Mod power and I must admit that unless it's a huge deal it's probably not even worth it.
