I got roped into goint to a scrapbooking workshop at local public library. The library had scheduled the workshop and no one showed up. They had rescheduled with same results. Librarians begged me to go. The only thing I came away with was an idea presented that in making scrapt book pages use three colored papers or patterns on page. I decided what worked well on scrap book was good for web page as well.

I find all the colored table cells distracting. Someone recently suggested this tool *http://wellstyled*com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html* I do not know whether it would help or not but you might look at it and see if it gives you any ideas. Notice it uses four colors.

    Good luck with your endeavor.

I can understand why it got slated. Glad to see you are not getting too antsy about it. There are so many things that could be improved on that site, I wouldn't even know where to start with suggestions. Maybe one tip: keep it simple.

    Hmmm....tooo busy for me!

    Other:

We do not use telephones for ad placement - only internet - so we would go away
Your regions should be shown on a map rather than arbitrary boxes - I was looking for Southampton
Your ad boxes would worry me in who I was alongside!!

    Not for me

    Hey Gem,

In addition to all the aforementioned points you might also want to consider these...
    • A clear and consistent navigation system, ie, a horizontal menu under your pages "header" area, for instance. Users like a consistent navigation, it's a good reference point, they get familiar with it. The link back to the homepage at the foot of your pages is bit annoying :)
    • Some of your links opening in new windows - After half a dozen clicks I had about 3/4 new windows open. Grrr
    • This one's personal - serif fonts. And serif mixed with sans-serif. TNR was designed for news print, Verdana for the screen. Keep to one font-family IMO
    • You have blue links. Which I click. And you have blue text/headings. Which I can't click. From a usability point of view keep all your links one colour and your headings another but try not to confuse users.
    • Loads of your categories are empty... nothing in my town - so I'd just go elsewhewre
Bets of luck gem, you've got a full time job there :)

How do you build your pages, Gem? Are they all "flat" pages or do you use includes?

Why do you ask? Does it look like hell on earth? :)

Gem, if your learning web design then this is a good start, my first attempt was horrendous. It's taken me 3 years to get it in the style it is in now, and it's still not perfect lol.

It's great your taking everyone's points into consideration. From a business point of view the 09 telephone number idea worries me, your likely to get less people signing up - its a website, so you should make full use of the facilities, email etc. If your using the 09 number because of revenue, then charge people to be listed on it, or put on a donation button from paypal.

Id did this on a newsletter and made a tidy amount of money..

    Darren :)

Gem, I'm just concerned about your welfare with regards to the potential time spent on updating - is your menu system pulled in from an include? I think it would benefit from being somewhere more prominent like near the top of the page maybe?

Thankyou for your reply,.......apologies..Here comes my defense,

The premium number is perfectly legitimate,To have one like this you need a licence from the telephone regulators. I use a premium number because for example if you write it down or store it in your mobile phone...you can then sell your ping putter after you miss a 3' putt on the 12th green...without needing to be near a p.c. Its a website that you dont need a p.c to use.You can advertise your house for a phonecall...i have seen £49.99 on other sites.
I dont have an e-mail for justoneuk right now..you should see my server stats for hacks for people trying to get stored addresses from something that doesnt exist LOL
I might add a simple submit form,,but not right now.
JustoneUK is ranked NO1 on yahoo in over 400 instances for a selection of TOP keywords and it only has cached about 120 pages out of 28,000.
If i had a 10 page website i could concentrate on about 5 keywords...but i have 1000's to work on.
My highest google ranking for TOP keywords is NO3 so far that i have seen...but it only got cached 5 days ago.
Hopefully i will be releasing e-mail addresses soon...
    yourname @ J1UK.com
Ads are coming in all the time.. also i have over 400 affiliates..i am on my P.C miimum 14 hours a day..7 days/week.
I downloaded firefox yesterday for the first time..went to a site and got red X's everywhere cos i needed plug-ins...try telling that to my MUM ! :)
"Its a bit colourful" because everyone that advertises wants their ad to stick out,,so they ask for Black backgrounds ..pink text etc...not my problem.
I give away FREE links if i like your sites and they are relevent, and i dont ask for links back...i went up nearly 2 million places in Alexa this week..2 mill to go :)
I hate flashy websites that all look the same...and databases ..and sites with pages of text Ads all done in CSS verdana....however i am always changing things,,learning,,and updating...
have a look what the site was like 6 weeks ago>>

    http://216.109.117.135/search/cache...s.htm&w=justoneuk&d=E943BEC2E3&icp=1&.intl=us

and i am listening to all of your critiques and trying to decide hpw to implement some of those things....prob 'til 5am tonight (as usual)
    Regards
    GEM

Hmm.... a lot of things here I would not being worrying about..alexa is one - waste of time.

    No form? Why not?

worried about email use for @ &#64
    or

    [SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript"]
    [!--
    emailE=('info@' + 'domain.com')
    document.write('[A href="mailto:' + emailE + '"]' + emailE + '[/a]')

    //--]
    [/SCRIPT]

Hmmm...you seem to be not concentrating on that which is important IMHO :)

RE: Alexa..I totally agree, damn spyware toolbar wouldnt have it on my P.C, but its figures are still something to rave about..teehee

I wanted a website ,,so a mate got me FPage at xmas last year..and voila a 28k page site in 8 months....rebuilt 4 times so far. I wish i had 3 years experience...but i havent, i have trouble writing fluid sentences let alone hand coding...LOLOL
I need to finish what i am doing right now,,and get some content on the site before i worry about setting people up with J1UK.com e-mail addy's...want one?...they're gonna eclipse Gmail.. ROTFLMAO

This is great forum because the users have great attitudes. I love it..some of the posts have me screaming :)
    regards as always GEM

    edit..again

    Couple questions:

Why have your url in the title? I would put keywords there instead.

Why do you have to write this "an incredibly easy to use website."

and the stuff you have in your graphic j1.gif - a simple website to use!!! etc. ???

I would also go two or three colors max.

Put some testimonials or something. just my opinion shrug

hi, and thanks for your thoughts,

    <url in the title-not keywords:>
Are you talking about my home page? OK..thats an easy one...
If you add my site to your favourites it will save as Justoneuk with the phonenumber.
and not a long string of keywords. There is no point in optimising my home page as there is little or no content (yes i know-same for all the other pages :))...and the home page will not be the landing page..hopefully the content pages will.
If you have a 10-20 page site then you should put keywords wherever you can, for maximum effect. Also its a good idea not to have a favicon..then it will show an error in your server stats and you see how many people added it.

an incredibly easy to use website: no reason, but i consider it easy to use, quick loading and you can view it without having things like flash, pop-blockers etc...but finding your town on the list is awkward..its under review.

The j1.gif.....only hype,,and mini mission statement

    Colours....you are right

testimonials...are on their way..its just a case of where to put them

thanks for taking the time to look around at these things, I cant do much about the colours...every region has its own unique colour, the main frame of the site is mostly blues but the content boxes are out of my control. What i would like to do i rebuild it in a better format than Frontpage and i can't hand code.
    regards to you
    GEM

    BTW: you have a nice site...all the <H> tags : CSS : doctype :
...the works....want a job??? hehe nice..very nice. I'm referring to your homepage..i hope thats yours LOL GEM

I do like the idea of clicking on a map... maybe two levels, 1st a map of the UK takes you to a map of your county then to your major nearest town... I'm contemplating doing something similar in the future for a hypnotherapist directory... massive on time and graphics :( but would be very easy to use when done :)
