    For promoting your website, you always need backlinks. As look as they are coming from relevant category and come through a natural process.

    It will count as 10 links....but if your links are seen by a mod they will see it as spam and boot you out= zero links ...not a good idea

    Most people use backlinks to get their page to the #1 position on Google for the keyword they are targetting.
    To do this your aim should be get more backlinks of equivalent or higher page rank than the page that is currently in the #1 position.
    Tools such as Market Samurai help you find this info fairly easily.
    But if you have only a few pages and keywords, you can easily do this by hand one at a time.
    Once you reach the top spot - adding backlinks at a steady rate should help keep you there.
