    The term niche market is to my knowledge a subset of the market with a specific product, service or interest that makes it a niche/small community or sector.

    sevenrock has it absolutely right. I tend to think that a niche is three levels down from the main category. His example is spot on:

    Games -> PC Gaming -> Starcraft
    Kitchen -> Cookware -> Silicon Cookware
    Exercise -> Exercise Equipment -> Elliptical

    It is obvious form the excellent examples above that a niche is an inch wide and a mile deep.
    If your niche is too wide, many will come to your site, but leave again immediately because they don't find what they want. If you niche is buyers is bigger.
