Plugins to Use Wordpress More Like a CMS, Less Like a Blog

    Hello all,

I know there are plugins out there that let WP be used more like a CMS and less like a blog.

I guess the most important thing I want to be able to do is have different right-side navigation columns for different sections of the site rather than one that is consistent across the entire site.

So, for example, lets say I'll have main sections for feature articles, hotel reviews, and then a regular travel blog bit. When the user goes to the feature section, I want to have the right side navigtion fill up only with articles from that section and nothing else. Same for hotel reviews... I just want a list of hotels that have been reviewed. When anything in this column is clicked, the related article/review will appear in the content section. Then I want the travel blog to be a traditional blog setup but separate from the rest of the site.

All of my navigation between the sections will be along the top. Are there plugins to allow for this or do I have to install WP several times in different directories? Hope I'm making sense.

I guess for now that's the most important thing but any plugins that will allow WP sites to seem more like 'static' sites and less like blogs would be appreciated! I know I've seen some handy ones around in the past but forget what they're call.

    Thanks,
    Kirsty

I'd be up for that. Where would I post for coders? This forum or elsewhere? Different site? I'd be able to do all the creative stuff and CSS tweaks here and there, I just need a shell to work from that is set up how I want it.

    Thanks,
    Kirsty

ps: But if anyone knows of any plugins that might help, I still think I'll have a tinker with it in the meantime.

Maybe i misunderstand what you are trying to do, but I believe WP already supports this out of the box. Saving as "pages" rather than posts will do the job, and just sort the new page into the appropriate category, ie (feature reviews , etc.)
For your travel blog with unique navigation, simply make a seperate install of WP in a subfolder as well and run it as a blog. This is what I'm doing at my site, so I'd be interested in what problems this would engender. You could actually combine them, simply distinguishing pages and posts, but you wouldn't be able to customize the blog theme to be different from the main site.
If all you want is to customize the sidebar, perhaps widgets are the way to go.

But is it possible to use different widgets for different pages? So for the hotels bit I'd want one right sidebar and for features I'd want another. Problem is that widgets aren't dynamic... I'd want the new posts to be added to the top of the right sidebar as they're completed.
