I suggest social bookmarking to get a good start. Then write good content on your site regularly. If you use wordpress software for your site too, then search the forums here for a wordpress checklist of things to do. Wordpress is powerful and perhaps the best SEO onsite tool that you can use right now. I have mine setup so that when I post a new article, not only does it ping hundreds of search engines and other networks, but it also updates my myspace, facebook, digg, twitter, bebo, wordpress.com, blogger, and about 25 other social networking sites. Be aware though, wordpress does not do all that I described out-of-the-box. You have to know what plugins to install and how to setup and use your site properly. Good luck
