You could have many type of buisnesses depends what suits you best and what you can deliver, like do you prefer services or products.
So you can offer some backlink building service or product, or even some kind of marketplace where people will buy/sell their links, reviews, blog posts, news, press releases, aricles, etc, or you can make some kind of script or software, really endless possibilities.
Once you decide in which direction you will go in terms of your business type, you need to make some extensive research on that market to get some general picture of it, if it would be good investing in long run or not, because you don't want a waist your time to some product/service then in a few months thinking of having another.

I don't know what is the reason but it opens very slow when I am walking though categories. Design is too plain. No graphics at all is bad for me.

 

Thanks for the feedback. This is a new CMS so I will keep a close watch on performance issues. I did notice some areas of the database design that might degrade performance which is why I am holding back on customizations. I want to make sure the CMS can scale. On my machine, categories are performing well but I have to wait for more feedback.

The look kind of reminds me of a ffa links site or third-tier directory. Of course its not, and you have decent content, but... man, with the domain name... I think you could do more. Maybe even staying with the direction you're going... certainly not bad basic idea. Just think there is a gold mine waiting somewhere there.

Great Domain - Maybe try to open it up to more broad categories "Best Money and Financial Links" is a specific market.

 

With a domain like this you could have one large directory like you have but on every subject! You can also allow people to post content to help you grow!

 

Thanks for the comment and I agree with your thoughts. I definitely want to provide a better look-and-feel to the site. One of the problems using a new CMS production such as Hotaru is that there is very little design and development support, so it is difficult to find the right people to redo the site. Whether or not is there a gold mine remains to be seen. Huge sites are closing down all over the place because of competition and difficulties in monetizing the site. One of the reasons I am focusing on money and finance is because I think that I might ultimately be able to monetize the site if visitors keep coming back. Yes. It is a possibility to open it more up. However, I have to do it slowly since at the beginning of theses type of sites, there are very few members who actually submit quality posts, so I have to build up slowly in order to ensure the content is there. Otherwise, I will be just like Reddit (Digg has entirely changed its model into a publishing platform so they are no longer user submitted). Focusing on Money and Finance helps me find and submit good content as I build up a readership and hopefully find other publishers to submit their high quality content. In time, I think I will expand as you suggest.

I looked at the possibility of building a directory but it appeared to me that the concept of a generalized directory is a dead end. I couldn't find any example of a successful generalized directory. It seems like the search engines such as Google and Bing have supplanted the directory model.

Also, I have found that it is very difficult keeping generalized directory information clean (not spammy), up-to-date, and useful. But if you can find me a good example, I would very much like to analyze it. Thanks for the feedback!
