Not really, people seeking information don't need eye candy elements, they just need the info, so I think the page content quality is way important then graphics.
Looks good. I myself am working on a blog so don't consider myself an expert on the subject matter. My two cents - maybe you can work on giving it an aquatic look. I found the font a little off. If you can make it look better it should do good.
