You have chosen a very broad subject to cover which is going to be tough going. Soccer (doesn't everyone call it football now?) is the most popular sport in the world. Why would I visit your forum as opposed to something more established? Is there a niche you can find that isn't being exploited?
Great advice has been given. It really does come down to finding your niche. Jack of all trades, master of none is the theme that one must not follow.
I would remove the splash page because you might lose some visitors that way.. it's a bit pointless to have one since there's just text and an adsense ad below it.
