I guess you have to be into affiliate marketing to understand the full concept or benefit. Yes they are both urls, however, when you send links in email campaigns you have to think of the end user and the type of links they will click. Do you think people will click links that look foreign in messages, probably not, so with keyword or product based urls, users get to see what they are about to click on. Which do you think people are more likely to click: marketing.com-vip.info or tinyurl.com/qtehuf With first url the user thinks they are receiving VIP Marketing INFO, with the second tinyurl link, they have no clue. These are just examples. Subdomain urls are more userfriendly and seo friendly. You can rank for certain keywords by adding them to subdomains as well.
