Is this website static HTML or dynamically generated (PHP for example) with a database backend? 5,000 pageviews per hour is 83.33 views per minute or 1.4 page views per second. That is not that much, really, unless you have a big script with lots of database queries. Also, it depends on how many file requests you have (I have seen web pages that request over 100 image, CSS, and JS files).

How much disk space and monthly data transfer do you need? Do you need a managed VPS with cPanel or can you do a bare metal unmanaged VPS without cPanel? Your answers to those questions will determine what is suitable for you.

You might be able to get by with a 2 core VPS with 2 GB of RAM. But that is really pushing it I think. You would probably be better with a 4 core VPS with 4 GB of RAM at a minimum. Costs will vary depending on whether or not you need managed with cPanel or can get by with an unmanaged, bare bones VPS. Managed 2 core/2 GB RAM VPS with cPanel can be found for $30 a month, $60 a month for a managed 4 core/4 GB RAM also with cPanel. If you want to go unmanaged with no support or cPanel, you can get a 4 core/4 GB VPS for $22.99 at one host (that I have read very bad reviews of, but they are cheap).

If you are doing 50,000 page views per day, I assume you are making enough revenue that you can easily afford what you need. $60 a month should be within your budget. But you can save a little if you can handle an unmanaged VPS yourself.

I suggest 3GB RAM, SSD storage (for faster database i/o). Possibly less RAM if your http/mysql tuning is good. :)

It is hard to put a definite spec as to many factors need to be accounted for but to get an idea:

What type of software will this VPS be running?
Do you need to factor in a control panel of some kind? If so, which?
What is the website currently running on and how is it performing?

Why not to give narrow specialized web host a try?
I've had a good run dealing with vpsnine.com - these guys know how to keep everything working and running efficiently.
They will also pass on the savings, you can use the code FIRST15OCT for a 15% discount on first time orders.

They offer Instant vps setup - their customer support is helpful. I like them.

I can manage VPS for you at digitalocean.com: my price is 20$ per month. Good thing is that we can test your website on different plans, they charge hourly so it will nto cost you much to test. VPS on digitalocean.com is not managed and not set up. That is very good for people that know how to set up server and optimize it for their needs.
