Old news. I think tomorrow is the end of public comments and then they will make their decision. There is a great article from George K on the issue. If this does not go through we all owe him a nice pat on the back for bringing it into the media spotlight. Without him I think it surely would have passed no questions asked. Greedy ICANN!
There is a lot of misunderstanding about this issue. This is not a big deal. The "Lifting of Price Controls on Registry Services" on http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-2-28jul06.htm is not related to end users, only registries and registrars. ICANN wants to allow registries (e.g. EURID for .eu) to dictate prices they charges regisrars (e.g. GoDaddy, etc.). This may possibly translate into a $0.25 to $1 increase in retail prices as a pass-through by registrars.
