Please Help With Wordpress Category Configuration

I have just built my first Wordpress blog and it's been quite challenging for me. It's up and running and indexed, but I'm afraid I already may have screwed some things up.

My specific question pertains to whether to use categories or not.

I was advised by someone not to use categories, but instead to use pages. I am following some training by this person but I'm a little bit ahead of the game and he says he'll explain further when we get to that point.

Could anyone help clarify for me what he's talking about as far as using pages instead of categories? Right now I have a "Blog" page and I am doing all of my posts on that page. I have a static home page that has a review of the main product I'm promoting (which is what others recommended I do.)

I already had set up a couple of categories and started posting under those, but now I'm afraid I'm screwing things up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lynda if you are using just one post or a couple of posts, then it might make sense to keep a static home page and update the post there. If you have a single product which you are reviewing then it does make sense if you keep a static page. Maybe that is the reason why your friend told you to do so. But if you are going to review products maybe every few days then it does not make sense because it would not look nice as it would become cluttered a bit.

Regarding whether categories or tags affect anything, I would say no. You can use categories and tags without any problem if needed. They instead help the users to browse through relevant positions of your blogs more easily. But if you are reviewing a single product, then you can make use of a single static page instead.
