Please Help With Blog Settings

I just built my first wordpress blog and I'm trying to make sure that I have all of my settings correct to make it as SEO friendly as I can, but I admit that I'm a little overwhelmed. This is a lot more complex than the Homestead Sitebuilder sites I've constructed and I'm a little intimidated by it all.

I figured out how to download the XML Sitemap plugin and there is one setting that I'm a little unsure of. On one of the settings pertaining to robot.txt, it says the following" "The virtual robots.txt generated by WordPress is used. A real robots.txt file must NOT exist in the blog directory!" I have no idea what this means and don't know whether I have a problem or not. I'm probably really showing my ignorance, but how do I know if I have a "robots.txt file in the blog directory"??

    Thanks

You need to use FTP client to login to your server (where your blog is located) and check if there's a file called robots.txt

Thanks. I have my blog hosted at Host Gator with C-Panel. Just for future reference, is it possible for me to view my files somehow through there? I'm sure there's something I'm not understanding here.

One more question if you don't mind. After installing the XML Sitemap plugin and building the sitemap, do I have to do anything to submit it or something? I also installed the plugin that actually puts a visible sitemap on one of the pages of my blog and everything seems to be working properly, but I wasn't sure if I had to do anything from there.

    Thanks so much

After you build the site map, you should submit it to Google Webmasters Tools.

I think you can view the archives on your host in C-Panel, but I recommend an FTP program, like Filezilla. It's simpler and you can see all your host archives with a little conection information.

So, go to the root paste and see if a robots.txt file exists.

No, you don't need to do anything after installing the XML Sitemaps.
