Please help - video site with wordpress

I would like to run a video site (movie/tv shows) site with wordpress since I'm not good at coding and making my own scripts and pages. Can you tell me what are the requirements for me to run a video site? I want the videos to be on my server, do not want to put embed codes. What kind of server do I need? What kind of player? Some other stuff I'll need? Please help, really need to make this!

Starting with a VPS will be best option for you. There are lots of resource available to use.

Do you need only uploaded videos or embeded videos. For embeded videos phpmyvideoblog plugin might be good. But if you need a proper video streaming site where users can upload then probably wordpress would not be the best option. You can instead go for some video streaming script. For a start if you are not sure about the profit involved then maybe you should go with something like www.cirtexhosting.com where you can check the growth and if needed upgrade to dedicated or VPS. I would personally not to go for yearly payments etc. though it might look cheaper as you might need to shift to other hosting and a dedicated server probably if the video site grows too big and you might lose on the remainder payment. If you are fine with their hostv packages which are their dedicated server lines then too it is not bad to pay for yearly payment as they would offer upgrade there if your website grows too big.

Free video sharing scripts including phpmotion etc. , cheap ones include vshare.in etc. while premium ones include clipbucket etc.

So, it all depends on your requirements. There is another cheap video hosting too for a start which is

But not sure how their video hosting quality is and how restrictive they are. Cirtex waits for sometime before pushing you to upgrade and only does if it is too high. Not sure about arvixe though as they are not known to be the most supportive in terms of resource usage.

@waziuz I need only uploaded videos that I'll run through my server. The users won't be able to upload since it will be a movie/tv shows site. I am not sure about the profits therefore I would like to start with as little investment as possible. I do have server on hostmonster but not sure which one, although it says unlimited bandwidth. Do you think I can try and start with it? I was thinking WP because It's easier to set up and I'm not familiar with scripts and stuff but I guess I'll have to learn.

 

I will suggest you to start with wordpress, because, wp has lots of resources available easily. If you use any other custom script, and you face some problem, only option is to go to a developer. But in wp, you can even find help from many forums! That is the best point of wp, and also lots of free plugins are available.
Starting with hostmonster is not a good plan, as they only have shared server. You need minimum a VPS to start. Because you will have your own hosted videos that will consume lots of bandwidth. Although hostmonster or all other shared hosting providers say unlimited, but actually there is nothing unlimited indeed.

There are lots of VPS providers are available. GoDaddy and HostGator will be two best choice. But Godaddy VPS is not fully managed. So if you are not experienced with managing server, go to HostGator.

 

And if I am providing the movies in HD will there be problem with the loading (buffering)? For example I want to provide good and fast buffering, is it more on customer side or on the server (mine)? The better the server the better the buffering?

 

This is true. But it also depends on customer's side as well. In a VPS, there will be no problem in buffering video/audio in full speed unless the bandwidth is exceeded. In dedicated server you have more freedom. As you will be the only user of one 100Mbps (more or less depending on your package) up-link.

 

OK @тнє Sufi thank you for your help so far, do you know if HostGator will be causing problems for me uploading copyright material like movies? I've heard that some hosts do this kind of stuff...

 

Not only HostGator, but most of the top hosts will erase your files if you upload copyright material. But it will happen, if someone complains! No complains, no erase.

 

What's the difference between me running video site WP via PHP script? I mean about the videos, their streaming, buffering, etc

 

There are no differences.

 

i think that the wp not good for video site. Use an other platform

@тнє Sufi I did some testing on my current server (HostMonster) with a video WP theme and when I do put a video more than 100 MB the buffering is really terrible, loading like 5-10 minutes before I can watch a couple of seconds, also when I put a hole movie (800MB-1.5GB) the streaming is not even showing up, just a sound's playing. Do you know what this have to do with? I am using flow player but doubt if the player's causing this. What do you think? The server or the script?

 

If you think based on themes and plugins only, wordpress is not for you.

 

This is a server issue. Hostmonster provides shared hosting only. You can not expect to buffer such a large video from a shared hosting! Hostmonster's download speed is maximum 2MBps (megabytes) and this is not constant though. It depends on the availability of the slot in shared hosting. From this side I really like HostGator. Because they have 10MBps (megabytes) download speed on all shared servers! Where GoDaddy is providing only around 385KBps (kilobytes) in their shared servers!
