If the content on your existing webpage changes, it is not necessary to update your sitemaps nor is it necessary to notify Google.

If you add/remove a page (especially if you remove a URL from your site), it is a good idea to update your sitemaps.

    ----------

Multiple sitemaps come into play on MEGA-SITES. I've seen this done all in one sitemap (several sub-sitemaps linked by a 'master sitemap', or a sitemap index file) and I've seen it done where your article directory has it's own sitemap (on article directory sites).

Amazon uses 'departmental' sitemaps within certain areas of their site. They have MANY sitemaps with several 'master sitemaps'.

Most folks have no need for something this complex and use a single sitemap file, or several sitemap files linked together by one master file.

Basically if all you URLs stay the same then you don't need to update your sitemap. Content has nothing to do with how Google views the sitemap
