I am one of the coowners of the site http://ww.bitsexam.com (I know the theme sucks). Our main was to provide free test papers for aspiring students. But I was newbie at this website stuff and have lately realised at the importance of SEO.Though I have been trying to get my site into search results of popular search engines I have failed miserably.

Strangely my Site ranks as top result in google for the search term Bitsat sample papers but doesnt even rank in top 100 for other related terms...juts check this for other related terms.

What are my options to get it on The top list.

P.S:My site is totally related to Indian content.

P.P.S: I cant afford loads of money for SEO....I have loads of free time so would prefer if people give me useful suggestions

Work at regularly building quality backlinks to your website alternating between your target keyword phrases as anchor text. There are many ways to do this...article submissions, press release submissions, forum signatures, blog commenting, social bookmarking, social networking profiles, etc. You'll need plenty of links with those phrases as link anchor text. To get an idea of just how many, check the backlinks of some of the websites ranking at the top for your target phrases. Link quality is more important than quantity, but this gives you a general idea.

Well, I just took a brief look at the site and two things I noticed are:

    1. The title on your homepage is WAY too long, try to combine words and phrases to make it shorter. It shouldn't be more than 10 words or so. The title is not the best place to string a bunch of keywords together.

    2. You are using underscores in place of spaces, where using hyphens (-) are proven to be much more effective.

Make those two changes, and you may experience a boost for your results!

    Good Luck!

Ruler, you should think about adding a Blog to your site. Even if you have a post once a week that will do wonders over just throwing up a static site.

First follow the Jonathan steps then start off page optimization as vansterdam said like that.

I want to mention couple of things I have noticed from your site. This is not related to SEO.
    1. No of google ads used - I think it is way too much
    2. Attractiveness in the home page - It is not attractive and seemed to be pretty much dark
