Noob here and doing a lot of research but not clear on similar domain names and how do they help you or not help you.

For example, you have a domain you want to build on called xxxxdoctors.com. and you want to build a directory of doctors. Should you also get xxxxdoctor.com if available and if so, exactly how would you use it. Would you just forward it to the xxxxdoctors.com? How exactly can it be made to be useful to the site.? How does it or can it be used in search optimization? Or do you simply get it and hope to pick up a few direct input traffic?

You don't need to get another domain, unless you want to .
And YES , if you do get another domain , you can either point it to your old domain( the same content will be shown on both websites doctors.com and doctor.com), or you can redirect it ( so when someone will access doctor.com it will be redirected to doctors.com ).

    Hello gene438,

Before anything could you explain what you mean by a directory of doctors, exactly?

A directory would be just that, a listing of doctors in that field with the doctor's phot, address, fields of expertise and a map to location, etc.

That's my question....if I have the domain xxxx.doctors.com and I am going to develop it, would it be beneficial to get the singular name (xxxx.doctor.com) and if so, then how does it help me and what should I do with it.

Your domain is like a title in the search engines and the search engines keep record of the domain(backlinks, content, changes, etc) so after a while your domain name will have a history which will help it rank.

If you have one domain name you use for years it will have all those backlinks and history. If you have 10 different ones they will all have small histories.

I hope that explains some of what you where asking about.
