Okay, so I have a survey that I need to do for a World Religion class that I'm taking. I'm supposed to survey 5 other people outside of our school, so I thought, hey, why not ask the intellects of the Politics & Religion forum here at DP? Not looking for only believers, but non-religious people are just as welcome to fill this out. When answering them, just choose a letter you believe in and a sentence or two on why would be great! What do you get in return? A BIG thank you from me. Maybe a rep or two too maybe. Thanks! SURVEY 1. ETHICS a. Morality is relative to each individual & situation; therefore, whatever works best or seems right at the time is the right thing to do. b. There are no absolute standards; therefore, each person develops their own moral standard. c. There is a set of absolute moral guidelines established by God that applies to all cultures and times. d. All moral abuses result from being out of harmony with nature. e. Morality is meaningless. f. None of the above. Why do you believe this?:______________________________________________ 2. HUMAN SIGNIFICANCE a. I have significance and dignity specifically because I am made in the image of God. b. I create my own significance in spite of the fact that there is no ultimate meaning or purpose. c. I am significant because I am a human being, one of the most highly evolved forms of life on earth. d. I am significant because of the god-like potential within myself. e. As a product of directionless evolution, I have no more significance than a rock or a snail. f. None of the above. Why do you believe this?:______________________________________________ 3. A HUMAN IS... a. A higher animal; the grand result of millions of years of evolution and his/her immediate social upbringing. b. A being who is incapable of moral perfection and who is therefore in need of God's forgiveness. c. A being who has the capacity to create meaning and moral values for him/herself and then to live by them. d. A spiritual being who should look within themselves for divine potential. e. A physical being who is miserable because (s)he asks questions about meaning and purpose. f. None of the above. Why do you believe this?:______________________________________________ 4. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT HAPPENS TO A PERSON AT DEATH? a. They cease to exist. b. They are judged and then rewarded or punished in an after-life according to their choices/actions in this life. c. They come back in another form (reincarnation), OR pass from one state of illusion to the other. d. None of the above. Why do you believe this?:______________________________________________ 5. THE BEST WAY TO FIND TRUTH IS... a. Through experimentation on data observable through the five senses. b. Through mystical experience (Yoga, meditation, visualisation, chanting, astral projection, etc.). c. Through not only the senses & reason but especially through special revelation from God (Holy Scriptures, etc.). d. God reveals truth only through the senses and reason, not through special, supernatural revelation. e. Truth is subjective; it is whatever I decide it to be. f. Because our brains & senses are the products of directionless evolution, we cannot trust our own perceptions of reality; thus, the concept of truth is meaningless. g. None of the above. Why do you believe this?:______________________________________________ 6. GOD IS... a. The Creator of the universe. He has concern for and is closely involved with his creation, especially human beings. b. A being who designed the universe and "set it in motion" but who remains uninvolved or, at best, a distant observer. c. Non-existent. d. God exists in the minds of some individuals only for the purpose of creating meaning and value. e. There is an impersonal divine force that exists within everything and everyone. f. None of the above. Why do you believe this?:______________________________________________ Thanks!
1. ETHICS f. None of the above. I believe that morality is absolute, but none that is is defined by a deity. I'm an Atheist, but not all atheists are moral relativists. 2. HUMAN SIGNIFICANCE b. I create my own significance in spite of the fact that there is no ultimate meaning or purpose. In a Universe with no absolute deity, there is no "ultimate" meaning or purpose, but there are relative meanings which we give to the world. c and d were close answers. 3. A HUMAN IS... c. A being who has the capacity to create meaning and moral values for him/herself and then to live by them. This is what a human being should be. a is closer to what most humans are. 4. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT HAPPENS TO A PERSON AT DEATH? a. They cease to exist. But honor is forever. 5. THE BEST WAY TO FIND TRUTH IS... a. Through experimentation on data observable through the five senses. This is the only method that has ever been proven to work. 6. GOD IS... c. Non-existent. This is due to my answer to #5. But the concept of a god seems to give comfort to some people, so in that way even a non-existent god is helpful.
Thank you for your response Will. Much appreciated. Would appreciate if 4 or more people responded to this survey. Also, it'd be great if no one "bashed" others opinions as I'm looking for YOUR opinion and I'm not looking for why you think another's view is wrong. Thanks!
