In my experience and research, ioncube is almost impossible to decode. When I looked at it several years ago, as I recall, there were some Russian programmers that would decode it for you. Most of the other earlier methods of encrypting PHP can be broken. Usually ioncube is used for the critical/sensitive parts of the code such as tying the code to a domain name and license key. Your server has to be setup to process ioncube with a special module. My hosting company, HostMonster, installed it when i called them for no additional charge. From my research the php source code is compiled into something called ZEND which in turn is executed by the ioncube system. If the other php modules are php source, you might be able to work around the ioncube code. It also depends on when the ioncube code was created since ioncube (ioncube.com) is a company that constantly upgrades their system to prevent their system from being decoded.
I am an experienced programmer in both .NET and PHP (and a lot of other systems). The people that wrote ioncube, most likely, invested thousands of man hours in their product to make it unbreakable. Granted, with enough time. money and talent you might break their system. Sometimes it's easier to just buy the current version and move on. If the current version is not available any more, their may be no alternative but to try and, somehow, retrieve the source code or write PHP to work around it or redo the whole system. The original poster did not indicate what the ioncube module was from or why he needed to break it. With all the php code I (or any really good PHP programmer) could give him some idea what it would take. Most of the ioncube systems that I have looked at only encoded a few modules to protect themselves that specifically tied that code to a single machine (url) with a unique serial number. Sometime the encoded/ioncube code "checks in" with the originators computer on the internet to validate the license. This prevents simply copying the code and running it somewhere else. Bottom line: Most of the time it's easier to just buy the latest version. You also get support and upgrades, etc.
I was referring to the people who want to decode these (usually pretty simple) routines. Programmers either write it from scratch or find something close and modify it. I agree, though, that something complex that I've never done before might be cheaper to buy than to develop. But after 10 or 20 years of programming (and I've had a lot more experience than that), most things don't fall into the "I've never done it" category unless they're something new - and then it's usually something worth the time to learn.
