    I’ve been checking this site out and they have some nice modules “including a directory module that I haven’t been able to get working”

    I will suggest you to try "KREATIO". Its a feature rich WCM solution and can be implemented within a short period of time, easy to handle and mainly meant for online newspaper and magazine.
