I want to re-do my side navigation bar to be more search engine friendly. I was wondering if I could maintain the look of it by having the buttons as a background image and having the categories on top as a css style sheet. Is it okay to put a css style on top of a background image? Is this being search engine friendly?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I don't see why not! I can think of 2 ways to do this - you could use ... actually, what site are you doing. If you show me, I might have a better idea.
Anyways, you could put a background image for the nav div(or td) and you can also use an image for each button/link. You can even get a rollover effect by changing the position of a bg image when you hover. Then, you can use just one image for all your nav buttons and just style the text.

I will find a page that shows how to do this - probably better than me trying to explain :)

Here is a good one: Uberlink CSS Rollovers 2004.
It is also here: ProjectSeven's Uberlist

This is interesting: The Gradient Green Navigation Bar
