I think you're probably being a bit naive thinking you just happened to find a lot of domains worth about $200 each. That's more than just a little unlikely. With the one you mentioned that you were hoping to target to the porn industry, I don't even think you'll get anywhere near $200 for that one. There are still too many shorter other options people can come up with on their own, or better keyword combinations. Chances are that most, if not all of the domains you registered are worth nothing more than your registration costs unless you first build them into a site. Jenn
Well I didn't think that all 29 names would be worth $200. I was thinking that maybe one or two or three of them might be worth anywhere from $50 to $500. I figured that it was probrably a little like writing poems or songwriting. For every winner you generate you'll have 10 or 20 duds that goes along with them. But...I have alot to learn, that's for sure. And I'm just glad that GoDaddy will refund my money. I guess you could say that I dodged a bullet. A $500 bullet! (The price I paid for all 29 names.) Thank you for your post.
Well, I'd suggest you post all of the domains in the appraisal forum for specific feedback before you opt to keep anything with the sole intent to sell it. Jenn
Hard to say how much a domain would be worth without seeing its value. In the end, it is really willing buyer-willing seller which sets the price. Domain name with contents are usually sold at higher prices because of the traffic and potential money making potential it brings. E
Hey everybody....I just found out that someone is interested in one of my domain names. They're fully aware that I intend to give the names back to GoDaddy and get a refund. So they know that it's available. They're interested in Killbaby.com And they were very explicit when the said that they have no intention of paying a ridiculous amount of money for it. They assume that I'm going to give it back to GoDaddy, but they're willing to buy it from me. But for how much, $10USD/5BP? I have no idea. I don't know what to do. Something tells me that I should probrably keep that name and not turn it back over to GoDaddy. No...let me rephrase that: I'd be stupid to turn that name back into GoDaddy. So what we have here is a full blown, experienced web designer who wants to buy a domain name from a dummy (me) who just bought their first domain name (and 28 other names) only two days ago, and who doesn't know CSS from crack cocaine. Another person, a different person, (not the guy who is interested in "buying" it from me) and one who has alot of experience selling domain names said that Killbaby.com was "not crappy." Now I know that that is not a ringing endorsement. Meaning that "not crappy" should not be confused with "You have a winner!!!!" But since I have two people who have expressed lukewarm sentiment, I'm going to keep that name. Where it winds up a year from now is anyones guess. I don't know what to say, now. And I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I should get it appraised. But then I know that you can't trust an appraisal service that charges you money for it. Does anyone know of a free appraisal service?
Well, go for it because if you return the domain name, they could just buy it off GoDaddy or any registrar for $8.95. If you intend to keep it then keeping it and developing it might give it some value. Some people use http://www.sedo.com/main.php3?language=us to park their domain in the hope of selling it and make money from clicks while at it. I am not sure about free appraisal service, I never trust appraisal services, paid or free because they are not the one buying the domain so they can quote anything they want, it doesn't represent a value which people would actually buy them at.
The best free appraisals are going to be in places like the appraisal forum right here, like I already mentioned, and get some honest feedback from people experienced in buying and selling domains. Jenn
Congrats man! Great thread , reminds me of when I first bought domains. I have hundreds ALOT of sites running, and just bought 25 domains today! Its a great feeling You will do well, you made the first step and bought them, now GO GET some html up on those pages!
Well thanks for the words of encouragement, Sundaybrew. And since I myself am a sentimentalist, I'm really glad that I was the source for your deja vu' moment. I have a bunch of HTML/CSS books that I got from the library. If you don't hear from me it's only because I have to turn my attention away from the discussion forums to focus on studying. But I will be back. I'm sure that there are other lurkers out there who are in the same position I'm in, and they too benefitted from all of your posts. In fact, one newbie PM'ed me to wish me good luck, so we're most definitely out there looking in. And hopefully someday us newbies will be able to give back to the board. (No matter what type of board I'm on, I've noticed that even the dumbest question can morph into a discussion that soon reveals a surprising amount of highly valuable information, IMHO. But I digress.) I want to thank all of you who contributed to this thread, and I hope all of you are successful in generating a more than adequate income from your Internet activities. This is not to say that I'll be gone for awhile, not at all. But as of this writing it's 9:21pm California time and now it's time to go read some of my HTML/CSS books. Thanks, again. By the way, speaking of sentimentalism, there's an old Jim Morrison/Doors song that has a line where he talks about doing something nasty to his mother. So after I purchased Killbaby.com, I checked to see if Killmother.com was available, but it was already taken. Please note, I do not have a hideous side to me. I could easly see Killbaby.com being put to use for any number of subject matters, and not just the self promoting Marilyn Manson type stuff. Okay, good night, everyone, and thanks again to EVERYONE who contributed to this thread. (And please do continue to post to this thread. This post does not constitute in a way shape or form a nail in the coffin.)
I wouldn't read too much into godaddy's "You've got a winner" message. It's just an automated script and probably randomly generated. Anyone can make up names. Remember that what sounds great to you may be junk to someone else. And why would someone pay you $200 for your domain when they could probably make up a similiar name that they like and register it themselves. For this reason, made-up names USUALLY are not worth much. You have to ask yourself, "What is that 'extra' that my domain delivers?" Is it traffic? Is it an easy-to-remember, short name? Is it a keyword that is frequently searched for? If your domain delivers 'that something extra' above other similiar average domains out there, then there is every possibility of your domains selling for $20, $200 or even $2000. We all think we have the best domains. I cringe now when I think of some of the early 'winners' I registered. Believe me, most folks in the domain reselling business started out exactly like you. It's addictive and exciting especially if you think a domain you can obtain for just $7 could potentially sell for hundreds or thousands. Someone here suggested that you hold back registering for awhile. I think that's very good advice. Otherwise, you'll find yourself swamped with huge renewal fees in a year's time. Learn all you can about the business. Try to sell one or two names. Try to develop one or two. Targeting lucrative niche sites like real estate, cars, etc is a smart move but you will also need to consider that the domain resale market in these specific niches is so crowded, that only REALLY good names will have any value. I wouldn't recommend a paid appraisal either. After all what is an appraisal? It is simply one guy's opinion on what he thinks your domain is worth. Post some of the names here and you'll get some HONEST opinions for free. All the best! P.S. Be very careful if someone offers to buy a domain provided you obtain a paid appraisal for it. This is an age-old scam
I buy most of my domains from godaddy. the "You've found a great domain..." is a great little marketing ploy by goddady.com it makes you look and buy for more domains in the hope of finding that "extra special" name. Personally I think domains are a great asset a generic domain with many uses is a good investment.
Update: As I already mentioned, during my first time foray into buying domain names I went bonkers, lost a little control of myself, and stayed up all night and into the next morning trying to create domain names that might be worth $100 or higher. That night and morning I wound up purchasing 29 names for a total of $500! In the last few days I have given some of them back to GoDaddy, and I got a refund on my money. Some of the names I gave back, and some that this dumb rookie figures would have just as well sat parked somewhere out there in Cyberspace gathering dust are the ones named below: WeSellHotCars.com ThePropertyQueen.com HotAndNastySexOnline.com WeSellGreatSoftware.com BiWayPolar.com KillBabe.com TheHotSexDepartment.com TheHotSoftwareStore.com WeSellGreatSoftware.com
