    Hi all,

I need advice on what type of hosting I need.

I own a very large forum with over 140,000 members and about 100 members+ are active.

Please don't post or PM me your web hosting packages, what I want are the kind of specs needed to run this site smoothly.

Will a VPS be enough to run it smoothly? or will I need a dedicated server?

I think you'll either need a very high end VPS or a dedicated server. I think it's best you opt for a dedicated server.

I think only dedicated server to be safe from suspending due to scale of forum you have.

Not to be redundant, but a HIGH END VPS, or preferably a dedicated server are your best bets. If you don't mind me asking, why are only 100 out of 140,000 members active? And if that's the case, you don't need to worry about a VPS or dedicated server. A basic plan from hostgator should do it.

There are a lot of hi spec VPS server plans available which should handle those kind of site loads. We suggest you try such a high end managed VPS plan first. You can always upgrade to a Dedicated Server later if necessary.

    Good luck.

I think something with a decent CPU and at least 4gb ram should see you through, especially if you fine tune and optimise it

maybe you should look for a cloud host with the option of elastic resources. this way you can easily scale up/down as you need with very little cost overhead and no downtime. here you can read more about it: www.bit-swarm.com/en/features/dynamic-resources/

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

I think VPS can host the site. I will try a normal package and see if it will fit me, if not I can always upgrade from there.

Just go on with a dedicated server. It is the best option for your forum. Goodluck.

You may purchase Managed Dedicated Server from Hostgator, their service is the best.

Still check out Hostgator's offers, they seem to be the best in the hosting market.
