I did a search and didn't found a thread explaining what is a backlink ...

Please excuse me being such a newbie : what is a backlink ?

I submitted my site to a dozen of directories, some of them required a backlink : i maked a file called backlinks.html and put it in my site root, i have only links to that directories in it. This backlinks.html is not linked from any page of my site, it's kinda residual thing only to get aproved i that directories.

I'm doing something wrong here ?

Please explain me what exactly is a backlink and what type of negative (i read about positives all the time :) ) effects can have on a site.

    Thanks!

Backlink is link pointing to your site.

Inbound links or backlinks are the same thing.

Backlinks are just links from some sites pointing to your site.

Doesn't matter, but that hidden will harm your site.
You could be banned because google see this like spamming.

    1) If the search engines can't fiund them they are completely useless. Afterall, how can they count it if they can't find it?

    2) As mentioned above, cloaking is a great way to get your entire website banned. Not worth doing.

    SE's see those links.
But when they index those backlinks you could get banned.

How can a search engine see a link if they can't find the page? I am working with the assumption that a useless page is not linked to and only exists in its own little world.

Also, they will only ban you if you use black hat techniques on your own website. They will never ban you because someone else uses a black hat technique and links to your site. If that were true getting your competitors banned would be easy to do.

If that useless page have backlinks then those hidden links on useless page will be indexed.

And I was saying that those pages that use cloaking or some kind of black hat will be banned, not pages that have backlinks on blackhat page.

well i deleted that backlinks.html, if they cancel my entry in their directories so what (there were only 2 links :) )

    but ...

in the site root i have a file links.html which contains my site link page , with no content because is it showed in a joomla module. so its a page with only links inside.

can i be banned for that too ? excuse me but i found it a little strange.
