This is amazingly easy to explain and implement: Firstly let me explain the simple process of a 2 way link (The most common link exchange) Website 1: links to website 2 (Your website) Website 2: links to website 1 (Link partners website) Ok. but in a 3 way link exchange website 1 will link from website 3 so that they dont give any PR juice away they just recieve it
you get 3 way links when 3 sites are involved in a link exchange. if you have 2 sites (site A and site B for example), then you link to your link partner site C form site A and your link partner site C links to your second site B. it can work the other way around like you may have one site and the person you are exchanging links with may have 2 sites as well
One way link is an strategical way of having a one way link but you must sacrifice the other site of yours.
Site A links to site B. site B links to site C. site C links back to site A. this is the 3 way linking process. It could be a link ring system also. very difficult to detect these.

Yes they are, don't build any more 3 way backlinks... google will find out and ban ALL of your sites, it's true, it happened to me.
I really really doubt google will do anything but improve your ranking if you do three way link exchange with good and relevant websites. There're plenty of junk sites around which just trade links with anything, no wonder they do get banned.
You link to him, he links to her, she links to you. But you still have to give a link to get a link, so in the long run, they are pretty worthless.
