I think getting someone a pet is a good idea if they have already shown interest or hinted at the fact that they want one. I'd love for someone to buy me a dog for Christmas but that won't happen, so I'll have to buy one myself.

I agree you should not just show up unexpectedly with a pet and say, "here ya go, surprise!"

If you knew how sad it was to see a dog who knows it is going to die pleading not to at the pound, you would not shop for dogs at a pet store any more.

I think pets should be a purchase you do for yourself not others.
    It's a big commitment :)

I agree. An animal is not an unwanted present.

My girlfriend's sister just got a hamster from her boyfriend and she's over the moon! I think so long as the person wants it - its fine!

Ask the recipient first. It will spoil the surprise but at least you know that your gift will not go to waste or to the pound for that matter.

before thinking and buying such a gift you must be sure that the pet is wanted and welcomed in that family...it's a huge responsibility when you decide to make a gesture like this...
workathomeshop, I totally agree with you :)

I'm hoping the people thinking about this will think again. Go to a dog/animal shelter and see all those poor animals suffering because of irresponsible owners. :(

I agree! I have two Jack Russell Terriers, first one I bought through a breeder, second one I got through a Jack Russell Rescue. The second one I got the (female) is one of the best dogs I've ever had in my life. Never buy dogs from puppy mills (pet stores), it's just bad taste and shows the lack of research on the persons part considering.

I think that pets should not be given as gifts. The only possible way that it would be a nice gift is if say a family has made a decision before hand that they are going to get a pet and it becomes a gift only because the timing is right. Unless this is something that is planned, it is wrong. I have these neighbors who got this dog this past summer and the poor thing is outside barking morning, noon, and night. It is so sad. I don't understand why people get animals if they aren't going to treat them well. We have a dog and she is so spoiled. She is a member of our family.

    Sad isn't it :(
The thought of cheering a child up for Christams with a puppy, the puppy starts to grow and is no longer so cute, the parents have to start looking after because the child has lost interest, that's the stage most people send to the pound.
