its a good start. Lots of different options you can add with joomla. Look for new extensions, such the market ticker as an example. Add logos, and maybe a hot/cold section. I know your primary goal is the forum, but why not make the visitors browse around you site too.
It is fine for a start. I would get a more attractive template and also do what the above poster suggested. Provide some "toys" for your visitors using Joomla. It will provide some "staying power" and keep visitor clicking around. Good luck.
