They will only be beneficial for 4 more years or until the war stops, after that they will be dead domains. Great for present day stuff. If they are yours, either put them to immediate use or sell them quickly. That's my opinion.
For causes, I think .org domains are your best bet, (ala moveOn.org) - they kind of convey that non-profit, touchy-feely vibe that can boost credibility (at least to some people )
