In a nutshell, it wont be easy to earn money, but you can, but try and avoid some common mistakes like using a category dump or starting a free directory then switching it to paid a few minutes later.

Most directories make very little from adsense, so if that is your goal you are much better starting a blog.

If you are going to run a directory, phpld is the best software. You can't make money from a new directory by paid links and adsense. People will not submit with paid links for a new and low pr directory, and without high traffic, say 10k page views per day, will not make money for you by adsense. Don't buy a high pr domain and then run it as a directory, and then cheat webmasters that this is a high pr directory, since it will lose pr soon in around 1 year if no promotion ation taken.

To make money from a directory, it takes time and some work. My directory was run since Sep 2006, it's free and featured links only charge $2.99, with a start pr of 0. For the first 2 and half years, the pr is 2, and I only got around 2 paid submissions per month. Since this year, the directory got pr4, and I got around 12 paid submissions a month with still $2.99 per feature link. So running a directory can't make money for you in a short time.

The reason I still run my directory is that I run the directory under a sub domain, so I don't need to spend any money for it (I'm using free phpld version and free template). And I know it will get high pr and then it will make some money for me, and I don't need to spend one cent for it.

IMO starting a link directory is too tough nowadays unless you have a lot of link power and a huge network of sites to boost you're new directory. I'd just come up with something else...

I have no PR at all on my directories, people still submit though, the traffic isn't that high either on them.

Directories are difficult to earn with, i very much agree.

No offence to you but i highly doubt your directory will get much more pr and you are misunderstanding the situation if you feel that to increase the directory income will be because the PR increased.

If you dont spend a cent on it and never have, apart from possibly renewing your main domain and possibly paying for hosting then your directory will most likely be the same in a few years as it is now.

    Dear All.

I am reading your comments and keep thinking me on PHP Link Directory Script, whether I should go for it with lot of Patience and time...

Being Search Engine Optimizer traffic generation is not a big deal for me, if I started getting visitors do you think I shall get minimum income through it...

Well...I do believe directories are harder to make money with than a quality niche website. If you really want to make money from a directory, it'd require considerable investment both in terms of creating the site itself (custom mods/ codes/ features/ theme etc) as well as advertising. If your budget and patience is low and your main intent is to make money, I'd suggest going for some other kinda site :) Fortunately, mine still makes some money but it requires constant investment too.

Making a directory is easy but promoting it is hard enough :) in my openion you cant get any benifit in terms of money untill you gain some decent PR.

Another idea is to setup a free directory then setup some kind of cpa gateway for submission. That way they have to do a simple zip or email submit then they can go ahead and submit as many of their links as they want. I would go that route.

Agree with Nima that you wont make very much in adsence via web directory wether its free or paid.
You might be better off doing a blog or something else that gets good traffic from visitors rather then
webmasters as webmasters usually wont click any ads.

    Wish you success

    thx

So you basically want to start a directory to earn money like every other online dude wants to. Directories aren't a joke, I suggest you try better things in life rather than wasting your time on directories.

Reason? It takes years of experience, patience and hard work to establish a brand name in the directory industry with a touch of just about high x,xxx$ - xx,xxx$ of investment.
