I am planning to launch a paid Webmaster related or General Directory. I am planning to charge very nominal fee ... ummm say $5 one time. Also, featured link for $15 or something. Do you think people will be interested in pay for the inclusion of their sites while there are 100s of free directories available?

Please give me your valuable comments!

There has been always a demand for directories, which i believe.

The fact is dont ever expect you will be successful with your directory. it always take plenty of time (home work). Try building your directory for some months and then start thinking of charging the submissions.

    Yeah, I agree.

First of all your directory needs to acquire some popularity and good reputation.

I don't think many would pay to get included in a brand new directory with no PR and no guarantee that it'll get quality links listed. And that's without considering low traffic at the beginning at least.

So if it's a medium-long term kind of project, I would say more yes than no, otherwise more no than yes.

So it's up to you now! :)

I think that you should make a promotion plan before starting the whole project. You can fix some goals in accordance to your budget. Having a web directory isn not a problem, but making it popular - including high PR - it could be.

    Thanks.
I am noting down all the suggestions.

What would you prefer - a Webmaster Related Directory or a General Directory like DMOZ?

General Directory is better from our point of view.

    There's plenty of both.

So it depends on many factors.

For instance if you have other webistes, what are they about?

Are you already an experienced webmaster yourself?

Are you going to accept the fact that you are going to be fairly busy accepting (free) submissions for the general one or much fewer for the niche one (although it's a pretty large niche)

    Etc.

Anyway, I would not choose either of the two and I would try finding something with more potential.

Did you have any other ideas?

    :)

Since it is so easy to make a directory... do both and sell off the one you decide not to concentrate on?

I know this might be controversial, but unless and until you start getting some serious level of work coming at you due to the directory, it won't take much time. Perhaps by the time you get them both into some PR you'll be able to tell which has the potential so you'll want to focus on it.

Just some ideas. I'm only doing one directory... so what do I know!

I think you answered your own question. Make it valuable enough for ppl to want to pay for inclusion.
